Since I teach high school English, I frequently get asked about books. I read a wide range of literature. I created this blog as part of a graduate class (Children and Young Adult Literature); I decided to keep this blog open after the class finished.
I'm a wife, a mother, a daughter, a teacher and a reader. Quite often I get asked the question, "What do you read?" So here is my answer.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Carle, E. (1969) The very hungry caterpillar. New York: Scholastic.
The public library in my county gives a new book to children on their birthday. Brody received The Very Hungry Caterpillar for his first birthday. Honestly, I'm not sure if I ever read this book before. I know it is very popular for early elementary classrooms. In fact, the caterpillar is EVERYWHERE!
Like all of Eric Carle's work, the artwork in this picture book is beautiful. He uses very bright colors, particularly greens and warm colors. The color reflects the lighthearted mood of the story.
Carle tells the story of a young caterpillar who can't seem to find anything to satisfy his appetite. Each day, the caterpillar tries something new. Then on the sixth day, he eats a lot of junk food and ends up with a stomachache. Finally, the caterpillar decides his diet should consist of leaves.
Brody enjoys the center pages of the book. The food that the caterpillar eats has holes in the food. Like most of Carle's books, The Very Hungry Caterpillar utilizes different page sizes and textures.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar is good for early readers. They are able to learn some simple facts about caterpillars, while being entertained through a story.
