Pearson, R. (2005). The kingdom keepers: Disney after dark. New York: Disney Hyperion.
Have you ever wondered what happens at Disney World after the park closes? Well, I have. And apparently I'm not alone. Ridley Pearson has created an entire young adult series around the concept. The first book, Disney after Dark, follows the Kingdom Keepers--a group of five middle schoolers who have holograms created in their likenesses--as they try to save the Magic Kingdom from the Overtakers.
I am a more than avid fan of the Walt Disney Company, so I had to try this book. And I must say, overall it satisfied my inner-child. Readers can identify with at least one of the Kingdom Keepers. The book includes some nods to characters and rides within the theme park. It's an easy read for adults, but not really one of those young adult books that most adults would enjoy. It is definitely meant for its intended audience.
One of my favorite scenes in Disney After Dark is when the keepers on riding "It's a Small World" after park closing. They become attacked by the dolls on the ride while the keepers are trying to solve a riddle. Most adults would agree that Small World is an annoying ride in its own right, but make the dolls move and attack riders while they are still singing and the ride goes from annoying to down right terrifying.
I plan to read the entires series since the first few books are so short. A sixth book is due for publishing on April 2, 2013 titled Dark Passage. Currently, Pearson only plans to write seven books in the series.
Disney After Dark has already gone through several cover changes in it's eight years of publications. I have included the newest cover art of the first book.
