McDonnell should receive the Caldecott for his work on The Monster's Monster. His artwork is beautiful and simple to accompany such a simple, yet heartwarming story.
The book depicts the story of three (and a half) monsters--Grump, Grouch and Gloom 'n Doom--who think they are the biggest and baddest monsters around. Their desire is to terrorize the village people and to reign as the lead monster. They eventually decide to create the monsters' monster to create even more mayhem. McDonnell alludes to the creation of Frankensteins' creature. The new monster even resembles the legendary creation.
Yet, the monsters are surprised with their creation of mass destruction. His first words are "Dank you," as he greets his creators. He is kind to everyone, including the monsters. Through the new monster, Grump, Grouch, Gloom 'n Doom learn to appreciate others and the small things in life.
McDonnell's story is a great picture book to teach the moral lesson on manners and reflection. I found this story to be simple yet powerful. Young readers would enjoy this book with the recent trend of monsters, readers learn that everyone can be appreciative of others. The Monsters' Monster is a book that should definitely be used in an elementary classroom.
