As Mister Seahorse cares for his unborn children, he travels through the ocean and meets other father fish who are also caring for eggs. Carle uses repetition that helps early readers: "As Mr. Seahorse drifted gently through the sea, he passed right by...." Then the reader sees a transparent page with artwork that is meant to camouflage the fathers that Mister Seahorse meets on his travels. The following pages introduces the fish and describes his situation. In the end, Mister Seahorse is able to say goodbye to his children as they swim off into the great unknown.
The artwork is done in Carle's traditional style of bright colors and sharp lines. These colors help hold the interest of young readers.
Mister Seahorse would be a great use for an elementary classroom for a science lesson. I really think young students would find the creatures presented in the book interesting.
