I'm a wife, a mother, a daughter, a teacher and a reader. Quite often I get asked the question, "What do you read?" So here is my answer.

Mister Seahorse

Carle, E. (2004). Mister Seahorse. New York:  Philomel Books.

Eric Carle's beautiful book art has done it again.  This time Carle takes his readers under the sea to explore the world of marine fathers.  Most know that the father seahorse cares for the eggs before they hatch. Carle educates his audience on other sea animals that are similar to the seahorse in that respect, such as the tilapia, pipefish, bullhead catfish, etc.

As Mister Seahorse cares for his unborn children, he travels through the ocean and meets other father fish who are also caring for eggs.  Carle uses repetition that helps early readers:  "As Mr. Seahorse drifted gently through the sea, he passed right by...."  Then the reader sees a transparent page with artwork that is meant to camouflage the fathers that Mister Seahorse meets on his travels.  The following pages introduces the fish and describes his situation.  In the end, Mister Seahorse is able to say goodbye to his children as they swim off into the great unknown.

The artwork is done in Carle's traditional style of bright colors and sharp lines.  These colors help hold the interest of young readers.

Mister Seahorse would be a great use for an elementary classroom for a science lesson.  I really think young students would find the creatures presented in the book interesting.
